What If the Purāṇas Described
the Universe Before Science Could?

Ancient Vedic texts contain descriptions of cosmic chronology, geological deep time, and biological development that correspond to modern scientific findings with remarkable precision — in some cases accurate to within 0.1% of current measurements. This research examines that convergence rigorously, across five scientific disciplines.

Overview

What This Research Does

Five Disciplines

Cosmology, astrophysics, geology, paleontology, and embryology — examined in parallel with Purāṇic descriptions to reveal systematic correspondence.

Precision to 0.1%

Purāṇic time-cycle calculations match the age of the solar system and universe to within 0.1% of current scientific measurements.

Primary Sanskrit Sources

Grounded in original Purāṇic texts, with careful translation and cross-referencing across the Bhāgavata, Matsya, and Padma Purāṇas.

Academic Recognition

Endorsed by researchers at Columbia University, the University of Melbourne, Rush University, and the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

The Research

A Rigorous Case for the Scientific Depth of the Purāṇas

This research began with a precise and verifiable observation: the chronological frameworks in the Purāṇas — the Yuga cycles, the Manvantara calculations, the lifespan of Brahmā — yield numerical values that correspond with striking accuracy to the findings of modern astrophysics, geology, and biology.

Rather than reading the Purāṇas through the lens of metaphor or mythology, this work takes their descriptive claims seriously as empirical statements and examines them against the scientific record. The result is a cross-disciplinary investigation spanning cosmology, astrophysics, geology, paleontology, and embryology.

The research also engages with deeper questions of epistemology — how a pre-telescopic civilisation could encode such precise knowledge, and what the Purāṇic framework of higher-dimensional reality may offer as a model for phenomena that elude current scientific explanation.

The findings have been published in the book The Big Bang and The Sages and presented at universities and research institutes across India and the United States.

“It is hard to find an author who is expert in widely separated branches of science, but Chhabra and O’Rourke have dexterously sewn together state-of-the-art discoveries in five fields: cosmology, astrophysics, geology, paleontology, and embryology.” — Prof. S. Ghosh | Columbia University
“Could anyone imagine that ancient texts stated the age of the solar system and the universe to within 0.1% of the modern scientific values? Neither could these scientists, before reading this book.” — From the book’s opening

Key Findings

What the Research Reveals

Age of the Universe

Purāṇic time-cycle calculations yield values for the age of the solar system and universe accurate to within 0.1% of modern astrophysical measurements — a correspondence that demands scholarly attention.

Geological Deep Time

Vedic texts describe planetary and biological epochs that align with the paleontological record, including accounts of ancient life-forms that parallel the fossil sequence documented by modern science.

Embryological Knowledge

Descriptions of fetal development in the Purāṇas correspond with precision to stages of embryological development that Western science only systematically described in modern times.

The Yuga System

The Yuga cycle encodes a mathematically precise cyclical model of time whose internal logic and geological correlates are examined in depth.

Manvantara Calculations

The Manvantara system involves astronomical calculations of extraordinary precision, compared against current cosmological models with remarkable results.

Higher-Dimensional Reality

Certain Purāṇic descriptions — including Bhū-maṇḍala — are proposed to reflect a higher-dimensional reality whose four-dimensional projection corresponds to what we observe scientifically.

What Scholars Are Saying

“The authors bury skeptics under an avalanche of well-researched facts. A real tour-de-force of scientific expertise.”

Prof. K. Pahan  — Rush University

“This book illustrates how the Puranas provide both a microscopic and telescopic view of the physical world from which modern science can learn and benefit.”

Prof. R. Buyya  — University of Melbourne

“You have synthesized challenging material from at least four different fields into a thought-provoking and compelling vindication of the Puranic cosmo-chronological order.”

A. Saha  — Smithsonian Museum of American History

“Chhabra and O’Rourke have dexterously sewn together state-of-the-art discoveries in five fields: cosmology, astrophysics, geology, paleontology, and embryology.”

About the Researchers

Siddha Hari Das (Sidharth Chhabra)

A researcher and practitioner in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition with a background in the natural sciences. His work focuses on revealing the scientific foundations of Vedic knowledge, bridging ancient Sanskrit scholarship with contemporary physics, cosmology, and biology. He is the founder of the Vedic Preservation Initiative.

Madhavendra Puri Das (Stephen Bernath)

A Vaishnava monk since 1982, Madhavendra Puri Das has spent decades studying the Purāṇas in depth. His extensive reading in physics, geology, and paleontology enabled him to recognise the correspondences between Purāṇic accounts and modern science that form the core of this research.

Speaking

Bringing Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science Into Conversation

These are not lectures about religion. They are rigorous, evidence-based presentations on one of the most remarkable and underexplored questions in intellectual history: did the ancient Vedic sages possess scientific knowledge that modern civilisation is only now rediscovering?

Each presentation is tailored to the audience — with visual aids, Sanskrit references, accessible explanations, and space for dialogue. Suitable for universities, research institutes, interfaith forums, spiritual communities, and cultural organisations.
